University of Nebraska–Lincoln

College of Arts & Sciences

UNL's Largest and Most Diverse College

Dean's Welcome

Welcome! The College of Arts and Sciences is the oldest and largest college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and every UNL undergraduate takes courses in the college. Our departments and programs-from Physics and Astronomy to Sociology to our Center for Great Plains Studies-are united in their diversity by a commitment to the value of a liberal arts education. Our faculty and staff are internationally recognized scholars, innovative researchers and award-winning teachers, and they are dedicated to sharing their knowledge and ideas with students.

Our students are among the brightest and most talented in the country. They  study in over fifty major and minor programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and interdisciplinary areas. They learn the skills necessary to be successful in an increasingly global, technological and interdisciplinary world. The college offers Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees, and 16 pre-professional programs, including pre-medicine, pre-law, and pre-dentistry. Many of our graduates have gone on to receive Fulbright grants, Truman scholarships, Rhodes scholarships and advanced degrees from nationally and internationally recognized programs.

Research and service opportunities abound for Arts and Sciences students. They can study turtle biology at our Cedar Point Biological Station, create software in our J.D. Edwards design studio, write poetry at the English Department’s Summer Writer’s Workshop or experience the power of the ultra-fast, high-intensity Diocles Laser in our Extreme Light Laboratory. The possibilities of a liberal arts education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are, quite literally, endless.

I encourage you to browse our Web site for more information about our departments and programs of study. The site is filled with resources for parents, current and prospective students, alumni, faculty and staff. Finally, please don’t hesitate to contact us - you’ll find our phone numbers and email addresses throughout this site.
