Sarah Elizabeth Sterns | Senior History/English
Employed by the Department of Arts & Sciences Advising Center

Our Ovation awardee for January is Sarah Elizabeth Sterns, a Senior History/English major, working in the Advising Center (and a couple other places). As her nominations say, "Sarah Elizabeth Sterns has worked in the Arts & Sciences Advising Center for just over a year. As a student adviser, Sarah Elizabeth provides academic advice to undergraduates in the College, evaluates transfer credit, and helps with the operations of our front desk and reception area. Sarah Elizabeth is an amazing student worker! She is dependable, patient, and helpful, all of the things you hope for in a student adviser, but she is also much more. Due to a significant turnover in our student staff over the summer, Sarah Elizabeth has gone from being one of our newest advisers to being our most experienced adviser, virtually overnight. She has stepped into her new role with poise and maturity. She has taken on new responsibilities in the office without being asked, she has provided insightful suggestions about the efficiency of the office, and most importantly, she has served as a leader and role model for our newest advisers. In addition to balancing her academics and her part-time job, Sarah Elizabeth has been very involved in campus life, including serving as an Honors Ambassador and as a member of the Arts & Sciences Student Advisory Board...

"Sarah Elizabeth brings energy and style to the office. During our busiest times, she remains calm and unfettered and makes students feel welcomed. She has mastered the art of advising with her professional attitude, compassion with students, and ability to know the requirements and how to access information... Sarah Elizabeth deserves a standing ovation for her dedication to the Advising Center and to Arts & Sciences students...

"Sarah Elizabeth shines as a dedicated and hard-working student adviser in this office. She has taken on many additional responsiblities this semester, due to a very small student staff. Throughout all of it, she has been a positive and uplifting person to work with. Not only has Sarah Elizabeth provided these things in our office, she is also an amazing role model and adviser to the students she works with and advises. She acts as a mentor to the student advisers in training and treats all students she advises with respect and empathy...

"For example, when she first started working in the Center, she redesigned the Bulletin Boards outside the Arts and Sciences Advising Center. She organized the information and created borders and signs to highlight important materials so students walking by will notice them. In addition, during a perod of transition in staff, Sarah Elizabeth found herself the only experienced student employee in the Center. She handled this period with grace. She kept her good humor and worked hard so that the service to students coming for advice to the Center remained of high quality..."
