Samantha Eversvik | Sociology
major
Employed by the School of Biological Sciences
Our Ovation for November goes out to Samantha Eversvik,
a graduating Sociology major working in Biological Sciences. As her nomination
reads, "The fact that she is a Sociology major rather than a Biology
major, but an outstanding member of our biology research team anyway,
is one illustration of her capabilities, her academic versatility and
competence, her spirit of scholarly curiosity, and her commitment to excellence
in whatever she is doing. Samantha is a talented, highly motivated, out-going
young woman whose help has become invaluable to me, my postdoctoral research
associate..., my five graduate students, and my three other undergraduate
students. She is a bright, cheerful, and thoughtful worker who is a delight
to have in the lab since she is capable and consistently eager to help
whoever needs it. Among Samantha's many positive traits, the one that
I find most impressive, especially for an undergraduate student, is her
ability to contribute to any task because she thinks about what she is
doing. This is especially impressive, in my opinion, when she has caught
data collection errors in the process of entering the data from lab sheets
into Excel files. Most students find data entry boring, and basically
enter whatever they see (more or less accurately). Samantha, instead,
thinks about what she is entering; she has truly contributed to the quality
of the research emerging from our work by questioning numbers that "look
funny" or that "don't appear to fit." ... Thus, by being
a conscientious, careful and accurate worker, she has made a special contribution
to our work. In addition, having confidence in Samantha's work based on
her performance has allowed me to delegate important tasks to her and
to know that they will get done efficiently and accurately. She is a model
for each of the other students we have taken into the lab... Her honesty,
forthrightness, and pleasant manner - in addition to her obvious ability
and her willingness to work as hard as she can on whatever she is asked
to do, and to do so with remarkable intellectual commitment - makes it
very easy for me to give her the strongest possible recommendation...
She is exactly the type of student for whom I think the Ovation Award
is designed - an impressive young scholar, who in working has demonstrated
exceptional maturity and involvement... "
