Faculty Development Fellowship
Please submit your Faculty Development Fellowship applications for Fall 2008, Spring 2009 and academic year 2008-09 by January 11, 2008. Applications must contain the following:
- A cover page using the FDL cover form.
- A signed copy of the FDF Acknowledgment form
- A completed Application for Leave of Absence
- A statement by the applicant (maximum of three pages) describing the project. This statement must address the criteria below.
- The applicant's current CV.
- If the applicant has had a previous leave with pay, an updated report on the activities and accomplishments from that leave.
- A statement indicating the rankings of the proposals from the same department, reasons for the ranking and an evaluation of the proposal in light of the criteria below. This statement should come from the chair or the committee which evaluated the proposals.
NOTE: A PAF is not required with the application. It will be requested after the leave is approved.
The criteria for the award of FDFs will be the following:
- Excellent scholarship (including research and creative activity and/or instructional development) is the primary factor in judging proposals.
- The FDF proposal must present a clear goal and a clear plan (including expected outcomes).
- It is important that faculty are able to explore new areas and to investigate ideas which potentially have a big pay-off but may not work out. Thus, proposals for risky projects may rate highly provided the potential for significant outcomes can be demonstrated.
- The benefits of the leave to the University and the faculty member must be explained in terms of departmental, college and campus priorities.
The College is allotted one leave for every ten eligible faculty. We will accept requests for leaves beyond this for a department but you should be sure to indicate how the teaching program will be maintained if the leaves are all granted.
Persons appointed as Assistant, Associate or full Professors of Practice are eligible to apply for Faculty Development Fellowships after the have met the requirement for six years of full time service. Those who are transitions from Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to a Professor of Practice during the 2007/2008 academic year may be given up to three years of credit for previous service at the University of Nebraska.
The Faculty Development Fellowship policy can be found at http://www.unl.edu/svcaa/faculty/development/fellowship.shtml. As stated in that policy, these leaves are to be awarded competitively and must be awarded on the basis of expected benefits to the University and to the faculty member. The primary evaluation of applications will remain in the departments. The Deans Office will review the applications to ensure that they meet the above criteria.
