Overview

Actuarial science applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in the insurance and finance industries. Actuarial work typically involves analyzing the impact of contingencies (such as birth, marriage, or losses due to accidents or negligence) on financial security arrangements.

An actuary is a business professional who deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. Actuaries are frequently called upon to make decisions that affect the fiscal soundness of financial security programs well into the future.

Quality actuaries are always in high demand, and many employers visit the campus to recruit top students. Actuarial science students have a comparatively high job placement rate.

Possible careers

Consulting actuaries, government agencies, insurance companies, and Social Security administration.

OVERVIEW

How this program prepares you for the field

As one of the few complete programs in the nation, the actuarial science program has a long tradition of excellence and has consistently been ranked as one of the best in the United States. The program is a joint program between the College of Business Administration and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Actuarial Science Program offers courses covering the learning objectives described in the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Basic Education Catalog:

things to learn
  • Preliminary Actuarial Examinations Probability (P)
  • Financial Mathematics (FM)
  • Actuarial Models (M)
  • Construction and Evaluation of Actuarial Models (C)

Actuarial science can be a rewarding career for students who have strong math skills and enjoy a challenge.

Most undergraduates begin actuarial science courses as sophomores and may begin taking the preliminary actuarial examinations near the end of their sophomore year. Upon graduation, you are prepared for the licensing examinations leading to an Associateship standing in the Society of Actuaries.

things to learn
  • full-time actuarial science professors and mathematics faculty members, including a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA)
  • latest Society of Actuaries textbooks used to teach the most current material covered in the actuarial examinations
  • Professors with insurance industry experience demonstrate how the mathematical course work relates to actuarial work

Transition from theory to practice

Class

The Actuarial Applications in Practice course is distinctive to UNL. The course uses case studies and real tools. It looks at assumption setting, Actuarial Standards of Practice, the professional code of conduct, and effective communication. Actuaries as guest speakers enhance the program's success by bringing real-world "field" issues into the classroom.

Meet other students, learn about the field, and prepare for exams

This is important

The Actuarial Science Club will show you more about being an actuary. This club has solid membership and strong faculty support. A variety of national experts have been scheduled to speak at their meetings.
