Overview

Biology studies living organisms and how they interact with each other and their environment by examining their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution.

Doctors, veterinarians, pharmacists, physical therapists, nurses, marine biologists, ecologists, environmental biologists, parasitologists, molecular biologists, and immunologists work in this field.

Possible Careers

Graduates work in a wide variety of professional positions, ranging from biomedical researchers in industry, to faculty members at other universities, to teachers and government scientists. The undergraduate degree is an open door to a wide variety of scientific and technical opportunities.

How the program prepares you for the field

you will take a broad array of courses in humanities, social sciences, and the arts, in addition to those in biology, chemistry, physics, and math. You can pursue your particular interests through course work and independent study directed by a faculty member.

things to learn
  • microbiology, virology, and parasitology
  • ecology and evolutionary biology
  • genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics
  • biomedical science, physiology, and pre-health areas

Nationally and internationally recognized faculty offer a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary expertise and opportunities for undergraduate research experiences.

There are also a number of facilities at your disposal.

Study natural biological systems in diverse and scenic habitats at Cedar Point Biological Station

Cedar Point Biological Station

Earn up to 20 hours of college credit in one of the richest ecological settings in the region - located at the junction of four major grassland types and in close proximity to a variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

Students and faculty mix informally in a highly instructional, hands-on setting, which provides an intellectual experience simply not available through any other university in the nation.

For many biological sciences students, Cedar Point is the highlight of their undergraduate experience.

things to learn

Teach labs, research, go to seminars, publish papers, and travel

Teach, research, publish, go, travel

Juniors and seniors have opportunities to teach introductory laboratories, gaining valuable experience.

Many faculty members offer opportunities for undergraduate research, including Honors and Degree with Distinction thesis work.

A weekly seminar, often with nationally renowned speakers, is open to all students.

Undergraduates have published papers; presented talks at state, regional, and national scientific meetings; and traveled to foreign countries.

Interact with people and explore opportunities via Biology Club

Biology Club

Biology Club student organization lets you explore research and career opportunities; interact with undergraduate & graduate students and faculty; and bring biology to the local community.
