Overview
The study of classics and religious studies leads students to develop a clarity of vision and an objective approach in dealing with the world around them, through the study of important texts of antiquity and their subsequent influences, both in the original languages and in English and by the study of the major religious traditions of the world.
How our program prepares you for the field
The primary areas of emphasis of the Classics and Religious Studies Department are classical literature and culture, world religions, Scriptural studies, and history of religious thought.
The Department also offers a full range of courses in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. In addition, the Egyptian, Coptic, and Sanskrit languages are taught in the department.
Curricula leading to majors are offered in Classics, Religious Studies, and Classical Languages. Minors are offered in Greek, Latin, Classics, and Religious Studies. Language requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences can be satisfied by Greek, Hebrew and Latin.
The program also draws upon interdisciplinary support from Anthropology, Art History, English, History, and Philosophy.
The collection of classics books and periodicals is one of the strongest collections in the university libraries. In addition, the department has access to all the currently available machine readable texts of Greek and Latin. With these tools, faculty and students — both undergraduate and graduate — can quickly and effectively do research on Greek and Latin grammar or vocabulary and Greek and Roman intellectual and religious history. These include the TLG, PHI, and CETADOC.
Religious studies courses are also available for credit for UNL students at Nebraska Wesleyan University, through a cooperative agreement.
