Overview

Computers are ubiquitous in the global economy; the industry is continuing its expansion in networking, electronic commerce, and information technologies. IBM, Microsoft, and other industry leaders recruit computer science professionals for many types of work.

Possible Careers

You may find yourself designing imaging systems for weather satellites or medical diagnostic equipment, joining the human genome project, creating special effects for movies, or helping invent the next generation of the Internet.

AREAS research, development, production, marketing, education

TYPES OF EMPLOYMENT Internet programmers, database designers, network software designers, scientific programmers, high-speed processor specialists, systems programmers, electronic commerce specialists, engineers of enterprise-scale software systems

How our program prepares you for the field

The CSE Department is Nebraska's premier port of entry for students serious about getting a top-echelon career in the field of computing. We have Nebraska's only comprehensive program of higher education, research, and service in the field, and we are ranked highly among peer Midwestern universities.

things to learn
  • Centralized location in Avery Hall with the Research Computing Facility right next door in the newly-remodeled Schorr Center
  • Multimedia electronics and Internet connectivity
  • Labs have all needed software and computers and are open for extended hours and on weekends
  • Your own computer can be connected to the network from a dorm room or through the Internet from off campus
  • Exposure to local industry

Move from the breadth of the field to specialized areas in your courses. First-year students and sophomores experience core computer science and mathematics courses in programming, software design, algorithm design and analysis, programming language design, and computer hardware organization, as well as supporting topics from calculus, statistics, and discrete mathematics.

Majors then select advanced courses from the areas of theory and mathematics, software, hardware, and applications - such as Database Systems, Communication Networks, and Design & Analysis of Algorithms.

Successful students in the CSE Department are enthusiastic problem-solvers, scoring high in mathematics, analytical, and quantitative skills tests.

There is department-wide support for undergraduate research. Faculty members maintain an active research program that involves graduate and undergraduate students. Each faculty page has more information about teaching, research, and service.

Use PrairieFire, our "muscle" computer

Opportunity

PrairieFire, our high-speed Linux cluster supercomputer, is used by scientists and engineers to study subjects such as nanoscale chemistry, subatomic physics, meteorology, genomics, crashworthiness and artificial intelligence. Students use it for several courses each year.

Contests, events, and departmental representation through the Association for Computing Machinery

Club

A professional organization serving the needs of computing professionals and representing their interests to the public. The student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) sponsors presentations by industry representatives, conducts programming contests, organizes social events, and elects representatives to active roles in the CSE Department.

Mixing computer science and business leadership in the Jeffrey Raikes Program

Opps

The Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management, formerly the J.D. Edwards Honors Program, produces top quality graduates who combine business knowledge and computing fundamentals for enterprise information and software systems.

We award scholarships base on need and ability

Scholarships

The Department awards thousands of dollars worth of scholarships based on need and ability in addition to other college and university scholarships. Contact the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office.

Some students win scholarships through their performance at the annual CSE Day programming contest. High schools throughout Nebraska are invited to send teams to this contest held at UNL in early spring.
