Overview

Environmental Studies looks at:

things to learn
  • The fundamentals of environmental and social sciences
  • Global environmental issues
  • Opportunities for working toward protection of the environment and solution of environmental problems

Possible Careers

Wildlife biologists and park rangers aren't the only "environmental careers" anymore. As the world becomes more aware of the need to protect the environment, careers in this field continue to expand, even in the business world.

You might, for example, find work in Environmental Education, Protection, or Law; Public Policy or Regulatory Compliance; or Global Information Systems.

How our program prepares you for the field

The Environmental Studies program is a joint interdisciplinary major offered through the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) and the College of Arts and Sciences (ASC).

Because the program provides a holistic view of the environment and human-environmental relationships, you will acquire the knowledge and technical skills needed for active participation in environmental careers.

things to learn
  • Begin with a comprehensive set of core and collateral courses in environmental science, issues, policies, and analytical skills.
  • Next, complete an emphasis in natural resources through the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, or select an emphasis through the College of Arts and Sciences: anthropology, biological sciences, chemistry, geography, geology, meteorology-climatology, or sociology.
  • Finally, complete a Senior Thesis. This is one of only six programs (out of over 600 nationwide) that requires a Senior Thesis. A grant is available to finance the thesis experience.

A capstone Senior Seminar continues the program's commitment to the exposure and critical analysis of far-reaching environmental issues.

Conferences

The Environmental Resource Center provides environmental information, job, internship, and scholarship postings, meeting and study areas, completed Environmental Studies Senior Theses, coordination between various environmentally related student groups (e.g. Ecology Now, the Soil and Water Resources Club, the Wildlife Club, etc.), and is also the program's primary advising office.
