Overview

Geography studies the Earth's lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena. As a science, it is basic to understanding the complexities of global change. It spans the social and natural sciences and emphasizes spatial and ecological perspectives.

Possible Careers

Graduates work in government and private-sector jobs that require both a broad liberal education with well-developed spatial and ecological perspectives and a detailed knowledge of up-to-date methods of cartographic analysis, statistical analysis, and environmental research methods. Work as a foreign area specialist, a U.S. Census Bureau official, an urban and regional planner, and more.

OVERVIEW

How the program prepares you for the field

The major combines a rich liberal arts education with specific skills for the job market.

Sophisticated mapping, image processing and geographic information systems software is available in our two computer laboratories equipped with 22 networked workstations.

The Geographic Information Analysis Laboratory, funded by the National Science Foundation, is open to students enrolled in pertinent geography courses, particularly cartography, geographic information systems and remote sensing courses.

The Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT) Laboratories, in the School of Natural Resource Sciences in Nebraska Hall, is staffed by geographers and well-equipped for computer mapping and image processing of natural resource and environmental analysis.
