Overview
The German language is one of the world's major languages, spoken by over 100 million people and taught by schools and universities worldwide.
OVERVIEW
How our program prepares you for the world
A person who chooses a major or minor in a modern language not only acquires indispensable communication and problem-solving skills in but receives a deep and well-articulated knowledge of the liberal arts and an understanding of another culture possible only through language.
All German majors submit a portfolio, which is only used to assess the department, not the student.
Study Abroad in Berlin
A semester-long (January-July) study program in Berlin. The program consists of two parts: the first part, running from January through April, consists of intensive language instruction at the "did" (deutsch in deutschland) Language Institute in Berlin. In the second part (April through mid-July) students can choose between study at the Humboldt University in Berlin or doing a professional internship in the field of their choice.
There's a lot to see in Berlin: the Reichstag, 2 opera houses, a soccer stadium, and the Wannsee. Earn course credit while you visit the Berlin Wall Museum at the former Checkpoint Charlie, see the Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg (areas famed for their alternative life-styles), tour the Charlottenburg Palace, and see the extensive displays at the Botanical Gardens and the Berlin Zoo.
Going into the business world? Consider a Business Minor
This 24 or 12 hour minor will give you exposure to a wide range of business courses. German 307 (German for Business) is on the list of "International" courses. Students taking German 307 are prepared to take the internationally recognized Goethe-Institute exam, the Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf; the instructor, Prof. Christina Brantner, is a certified tester for this exam.
