Overview

The Great Plains stretches westward from the Missouri River at Omaha and Kansas City to the Rocky Mountains, and northward from the Texas Panhandle into the Canadian prairie provinces - characterized by highly variable weather set against grassy, rolling land.

The sparsely-populated region invites inquiry into the relationships between the environment and the culture brought to it by its various inhabitants, and into the implications of these relationships for the future of the region.

Possible Careers

This major may be useful for students who are planning a career in business, education, law, planning, policy analysis, agriculture, or history in the plains region.

Great Plains Studies graduates have found employment in the Nebraska State Historical Society, the National Park Service, the Nebraska Humanities Council, the University of Nebraska, and businesses such as Cabela’s and Sandhills Publishing.
