Overview
International Studies is a cross-disciplinary program that explores international issues and subjects, examines diverse international themes in culture and society, and integrates a new and broader understanding of international issues and themes into all academic fields.
Possible Careers
Find a career in: International financial institutions; international legal firms, multinational corporations; research, teaching; U. S. government; United Nations.
How our program prepares you for the world
Choose two of three thematic specializations: power and production, international relations or cultural encounters. You will also choose a regional specialization from among Africa, Asia, Europe or Latin America.
In addition to these general requirements, two core courses and a foreign language competency are required. The program is enhanced by a global competency requirement (international study or internship) and a specialized upper division seminar or thesis, both of which make a major more marketable in a competitive job market.
The International Studies major is unique because it is very extensive and supported by a wide range of courses and faculty, yet is not centered in a particular department. It uses an interdisciplinary approach to study the economic, political, geographic and historical influences that have shaped our world.
Overseas studies and international involvement are available
Study in various countries for a year, a semester, a summer or, in some cases, a shorter period of time. Some programs are direct exchanges (you pay only your fees here at Nebraska and your airfare to the country where you will study).
We also promote internships in organizations with significant international involvement. There are opportunities for involvement in local organizations as well as those with broader national characteristics, such as those found in many private and public agencies in Washington, D.C.
You have access to hundreds of activities and groups related to specific academic, social, cultural or political interests.
