Overview

Philosophy is the study of general problems concerning existence, knowledge, the mind, and so on in a systematic approach using reasoned argument.

Philosophers might ask questions about the meaning of ethics, whether human beings can have knowledge, or how minds and brains are related.

How our program prepares you for the field

The first meeting of what became the western division of the American Philosophical Association was held at the University of Nebraska on January 1-2, 1901.

Our visiting speaker's program regularly brings prominent philosophers to UNL to present papers and talk with faculty and students.

Our faculty are all active in research - publishing papers in major philosophy journals and books with respected presses. Advanced courses are usually taught by faculty who are actively involved in research in that field. Faculty members' areas of interest can be found on individual Web pages linked through the department Web site.
