Overview
Plant biology involves the use of modern scientific techniques to understand how plants grow and reproduce in urban, rural and natural landscape settings as well as under intensive crop culture.
Tools applied by plant biologists will one day unlock the mechanisms of plant adjustment to changing environments as well as how plants produce natural medicines and other nutraceuticals.
Possible Careers
You might work in crop engineering, a plant and soil analysis lab, or environmental consulting, among other fields.
OVERVIEW

How this program prepares you for the field
The course work is flexible. You will take a core of basic biology and science courses that gives you first-semester contact with senior faculty - teachers and researchers with diverse scientific interests - who will help you design your own program.
The core courses allow you to move into another life science or continue in Plant Biology by exploring at four levels:
|
|
|
You'll experience hands-on research in faculty research labs and field research sites.
The plant biology program includes a career experience/internship course (BIOS 395/ AGRO/ RNGE 295/ HORT 395/ NRES 497) which provides the opportunity to gain work experience in an off-campus setting.
You will also present a research project - an experiential portfolio - as part of the Introduction to Plant Biology course.
Requirements met by this major satisfy most Pharmacy School and Allied Health School admissions requirements and prepare students for graduate training in the sciences.
Connect with expert faculty for research experience over the summer
The Summer Research Program will give you a preview of graduate school and connect you with faculty whose expertise is related to your interests, giving you first-hand research experience.
Networking with other plant biologists
There are many professional organizations and local student clubs centered on plant science, such as the American Society of Plant Biologists and the Agronomy Club.
This program is a collaboration between four areas:
