Overview

Considered by Aristotle to be the "master" science, Political Science studies the actual as well as the most preferred way people organize to govern themselves.

Possible Careers

Political scientists work in a variety of settings, whether business, government, or not-for-profit.

You might work in law, business, or government.

OVERVIEW

CAREERS

How our program prepares you for the field

things to learn
  • American government - examines national, state, and local government
  • Comparative government - explores how countries other than the United States govern themselves
  • International relations - addresses problems arising when nations interact with each other;
  • Political theory - treats the fundamental issues of how states should organize and justify themselves
  • Public administration - examines public organizations and how they make decisions
  • Public policy - explores specific issues and the political process that shapes, molds, and enacts policy preferences into law

Studying these fields will help you understand citizenship, the meaning of democracy, and the legitimate purposes of government. You will see how a diverse citizenry can: be a part of the political and social order, understand and value democratic processes and institutions, and accept decisions arrived at through them.

A public policy studies emphasis leads to a certificate in public policy analysis.

Department scholarships are available to majors (sophomore and above) on a competitive basis.
