Overview

Women's and Gender Studies: Exploring the lives of women and analyzing the relationship between gender and power. This rapidly-growing, interdisciplinary field first began in the 1970s by studying the lives of women in all their diversity. In recent years it has expanded to include the study of gender more broadly.

Women's Studies programs were often created in response to student demand. Learn more of the field's history here.

People in this field analyze the construction of feminine, masculine, homosexual, and intersexual (gender) identities and their intersection with other social identities, such as race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and physical ability. They also assess how gender signifies what noted scholar Joan Scott has called "relationships of power."
