All students must fulfill the University’s General Education requirements, which include courses in a broad variety of academic areas including communication, social and natural sciences, and arts and humanities. In addition to these requirements students declare a major. Arts & Sciences offers majors in four areas: Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Programs. Here is a list of our majors by category:

Humanities (study of thought, language, cultures):

  • Classics and Religious Studies
  • Classical Languages (Greek and Latin)

  • French, German, Russian, or Spanish

Natural Sciences and Mathematics (observation and analysis of material and mathematical reality):

  • Actuarial Sciences

  • Meteorology/Climatology
  • Physics

Social Sciences (observation and interpretation of group and individual behavior, communication, social structures):

  • Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

Interdisciplinary Programs (Majors in these programs allow students to combine coursework from various disciplines. For example, students with a Great Plains Studies major might take courses focused on the Great Plains in English, History, Anthropology, and Biological Sciences):

  • Environmental Studies
  • Ethnic Studies
  • European Studies
  • Film Studies
  • Great Plains Studies
  • International Studies
  • Latin American Studies Medieval and Renaissance Studies
  • Women’s and Gender Studies

The Individualized Program of Studies option allows a limited number of students to design their own major with the assistance of College advisers and a faculty committee.

In addition to a major, students can pursue a pre-professional program to prepare them for careers in law or health professions. Programs include:

  • Pre-law
  • Pre-health including pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-medical technology, pre-optometry, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, and pre-physician assistant.

The University’s extensive Study Abroad Program gives students the opportunity to complete part of their program overseas, at one of 140 universities in over 50 countries.
